The Superpave grading was developed as a part of a 5year strategic highway research planning (SHRP) from 1987 to 1992 in the United States, to have a performance-based grading system for bitumen.
Grading asphalt binders using the performance Grade system carries out according to them applications in specific environmental conditions (particularly temperature ranges) as well as traffic stream and the intensity. Performance Grade Bitumen can limit the binder potential to contribute to permanent deformation, fatigue cracking and thermal cracking. Therefore, they are mainly used to ensure optimal performance of flexible pavements.
